Common filing types

• Accounts, filed annually
• Confirmation statements, confirming the company's registered details each year

How filing history is organised

Entries appear newest first, each with the date received, a form code such as AA, CS01, AP01 or TM01, and a short description of what the document does. The form code is the quickest way to understand an entry: AA is accounts, CS01 a confirmation statement, AP01 an individual director appointment, TM01 a termination of a director's appointment.

The history is cumulative. Nothing is removed as a company ages, so a long-established company can have hundreds of entries covering decades of routine administration.

What a filing pattern can suggest

Regular, on-time filings suggest a company that is being administered properly. Long gaps, repeated late filings or a proposal to strike off are worth noticing, though there are often innocent explanations, including changes of accountant or a dormant period.

Clusters of filings on a single date are common and usually harmless, typically an accountant catching up on several routine forms at once. A sudden change of registered office combined with several officer terminations is a more meaningful pattern, and is worth reading alongside the company status.

Filing history is a record of documents received. It says nothing about whether the contents of those documents are accurate, and Companies House does not verify most of what it is sent.

Filings that carry the most information

• Confirmation statements, which refresh the registered details and often the shareholder list
• Accounts, which show the accounting period and the type of accounts filed
• Gazette notices, which signal a proposal to strike the company off the register
• Insolvency documents, which record administration, liquidation or receivership
• Charge documents, which show when security was created or satisfied
